I uploaded the footage I captured from the camera onto one of the college Macintosh’s so I could begin editing. As the camera was a new piece of equipment I asked the college technician if using Final Cut Pro was alright but he directed me to Final Cut Express which is a smaller program but following his guidance I used the express version. I later found out that it would have been a better choice to use Final Cut Pro and he had made a mistake directing me to the express version. I didn’t come across any problems using the equipment but I was slightly less familiar with how it works causing me to work slower.

Before I could begin piecing together the footage I had I needed to get a copy of the sound recording of the gig from the band. The Square charges for their recording services. Luckily the band wanted a live recording of themselves so they happily paid for it. I therefore agreed to let them take the disc first so that they could copy the file for their own purposes before taking the disc myself to copy the file. Reece Jones the singer of the group agreed to hand over the disc within the next few days. However problems kept occurring and Reece kept finding excuse why he couldn’t give me the disc yet. My patience was coming to an end and I finally got the disc in early March.

I ripped the audio file off of the disc and cut it down to the one track I wanted to use. Once the track was down on the timeline I filtered through my footage to find any footage of the song itself so I could drop it on the timeline and sync it up with the audio. I was really pleased I captured the band performing the middle 8 to the song as they particularly mention that part of the song as an improvement made to it and the audio track and my footage work together brilliantly. After I synced up all the footage I could with the audio track I began cutting the video of the group sitting in the interview room to all necessary moments making sure that I had a healthy balance between the footage of the performance and the footage of the band talking to the camera. I cut out all the audio the camera caught in the performance footage and kept only the parts where they are talking to the camera.

I chronologically structured the questions when I put them into the final video so that they made sense to the viewer when they watch the video. I chose to film my interview in a style that you never hear the interviewer speak you only ever hear the band speak to show its all about them, similar way to how MTV shoot theirs This turned out O.K. but at parts of the video its hard to recognise what the band are talking about. This was a planning error and in future I’ll need to consider carefully how I ask the questions or inform the band that they’ll need to include the question somehow within their answer so that the viewer isn’t left behind. To put these shots into the video wasn’t a huge problem. I realised that I had to structure the whole video around the interview itself and sometimes the length of time the band took to answer one question cause me to leave out some performance parts whereas they were shorter with other answers making me find suitable footage to follow.

Finding Footage of the performance to fill gaps between moments of talking had its difficult parts. I realised that sometimes I showed far too much in the shots and it was clear to see that the video and audio wasn’t doing the same thing. This problem was due to the camera malfunction at the gig as I was forced to find suitable clips to fit t the music rather than going back to the initial angle which would have definitely fit. I felt that after careful consideration and analysis of my clips I found suitable enough footage to put along side the audio. I checked everything I put in careful to see if it tampered with continuity and the flow to the piece and I was glad to see that the footage look genuine alongside the audio.

To give my video more interest I sometimes had the audio come in before the visual when the band would start talking again. This gave a lot of footage to the video a kind of ‘Voice over’ effect and provided a documentary feel to it. As well as overlapping video clips I used some video transitions. A lot of the time I used hard cuts between the conversation and the performing but this had a very jumpy feel after a while. I experimented with some transitions to see if I could find a more relaxing way to move from shot to shot. Some of the ‘Wipe’ transitions didn’t look too bad but they were too cheesy as the band wanted to go for a serious look. I therefore decided upon fades as they slowed down the momentum of the video whilst upholding the sense of seriousness. I tried looked at other transitions so I could include a variety within my video but cuts and fades were the only ones that fit well with the video. A couple of times the lighting was dark in the venue and at one part of my video I had the lighting darkened at the end of one clip of the crowd moshing and dancing and in the next clip which is a close up of a drum symbol the lighting came from dark to bright. I decided I would use this and exaggerate it by fading to black between the shots and after watching it over its easy to miss the editing altogether as it runs so smoothly.

Once I had all my video clips down in the order I wanted I then adjusted the audio levels to the soundtrack so that each time the band talk I can turn down the soundtrack so the listener can hear them more clearly whilst keeping the vague sound of the music in the background. As the music was too quiet to completely make out what they’re playing I could add extra clips of the performance on top of the commentary to break up the larger sections and add interest. I made sure I adjusted the audio levels last because if I did it before hand it would cause problems if I need to rearrange the clips.

All I had left to do on the video was the titles for this I used the program ‘Livetype’ which provided me with a wide selection of fonts, effects and transitions to experiment with. I wanted to keep the main title simple so I chose to have the band name and song name appear on the screen as we hear the band prepare to start behind the black screen. As the footage fades in I chose to let the titles remain for a short while more before fading away. I preferred to let the title linger over the next clip as it looks more attractive and it didn’t look so dependant on the plain black screen.

If the viewer isn’t familiar with the band members I chose to have small banners at the bottom of the screen each time a members spoke for the first time showing their name and role in the band. This was effective but it highlighted the fact that some members are quieter than others and the drummers name isn’t featured until near the end of the video. I would’ve push the clip further forward in the video but it would have interfered with the continuity of the question asked and it would have just confused the viewer much more so I had to leave it as it was.

To give the promotional DVD the extra touch of class i used a program where i could follow simple steps in order to create a DVD menu. First i exported my video file through quicktime so i could then import it on the menu program. when i began work ing on the software I found that this was really easy to use. I first chose which format to use and i decided to go for simple film strip menu on plain white background. the menu was simple but i thought it looked brilliant. I added titles to the bottom of the page and a small play button which i linked to my video file. I finally added small screens within the filmstrip spaces where i had the beginning of my video playing. This instantly gave my menu a professional and classy feel to it whilst making it more appropriate and personalised to the group.

when shooting the performance. I decided that I would leave the camera in a fixed place on the balcony seating area for the whole duration of Active mental freedom so that I knew that I would definitely have enough footage to last the song and have a foundation shot to fall back upon if some shots were badly taken, I also chose to do this so that I could later sync up the audio track with the visual to boost the live appearance. I came across a problem when doing this because the camera was making errors in recording and only recorded for a short period of time before stopping. I couldn’t understand what was going wrong. I had made no errors in setting up the camera and recording ran smoothly when filming the interview so I knew there was technical problems occurring with the camera itself. I checked the camera memory to see if it had recorded what I just shot and regardless of what errors it said it had it managed to record the footage perfectly. I had no time to work out the problem and solve it because the band were performing the song I wanted to use and this was my one and only chance to capture it, even if it were in small pieces. So each time the camera would stop I would press the record button once more until the error came up again. I checked once more to see if the camera did capture the footage which it did so I continued with the same method.

Once the band finished their song I decided I would try sorting out the camera. Although the camera didn’t say the battery was running low I changed it anyway then turned the power back on. After a little while the camera started working properly again so I then continued to take close-ups of the performers playing their instruments. I hand held the camera from here on so that I didn’t take up too big of area which could cause conflict with the audience. By hand holding the camera it gave the performance a more live effect which I liked but I tried my best to keep the camera steady as possible so that the video ran smooth. I came across a few collisions with the audience as they danced and enjoyed themselves. They could clearly see I was hold equipment and when I was by the front stage they made sure to try and keep clear of me.

I recorded the performers from a variety of angles and used zooms and extreme close-ups so that the viewer cannot recognise what the performer is playing/singing. If I did this I thought I could possibly get away with using these shots in my video, making out they’re still playing the same song. The lighting in the venue helped with my editing a lot as I could line up the flashing lights in time with the music so that they look a part of the same clip and it sometimes masked what the performer is playing so the viewer is unable to tell if it’s the same song or not.

Now I had finished it I handed my poster over to Luci in my group as she is most experienced at photography and all the graphic programs. She took photographs of my poster attached to the backdrop of a photography room with a high quality camera, using professional lighting and technology. We did this so that we could use a higher quality copy of my poster on the computers when we come to add more information. Once she’s done this and uploaded the pictures onto the computers I helped her put any more information necessary onto the posters such as the venue address, the gig date, price and a small note saying to bring the flier with them if they attend the gig. This way we can collect them at the door as a way to count and see how successful our promotions were.

We printed off plenty of A4 colour posters and plenty of A5 sized fliers to pin up and hand out. To improve the quality of the posters that will be pinned up Luci managed to get them laminated in her spare time. We considered where the best place to advertise the gig would be. We needed a place where our target audience would see it often and most likely take the time to read it. Our immediate decision was around the college itself on walls and windows, we stuck posters up around notice boards in the music department, On windows by smoking areas so that students would read them on their breaks. We covered most hotspots in the college that we knew of. Under each poster we tucked some flier in so that people could take them if desired.

I didn’t want to limit my advertising to the college so I took a number of posters and fliers back to my home town of Cheshunt which is approximately 10 miles away. Regardless of the distance I know teenagers from my own town visit the venue often with little trouble because of the national railway lines. I took some posters around some news agents and asked if I could possibly put one up on their front window for a short while. Most refused me for their own reasons but one did accept as I had previous experience with the shop as I was once their paper boy and I knew them quite well.

I then spoke to one of my best friend called Michael who is a sixth form prefect at my old secondary school, Turnford. I asked him if it was possible to put some advertisements around the school to help with my project. He found out if it was possible for me to do this and told me that I was. I handed to him a few posters and many fliers so that he could distribute them around the school. I was limited to the Sixth form because the band name and poster/flier subjects was deemed inappropriate for the younger years. This wasn’t a huge problem as they fell under the age requirement of the venue. I was pleased to find out that 3 Secondary school sixth forms in my area work together in a school consortium, Cheshunt, Turnford and St Mary’s school. As my friend travels between these schools for various lessons I had the opportunity to broaden my advertisements to the surrounding school. I therefore had to print off more posters and fliers.

I returned to college to print off more but realised I had printed of the fliers without the information on. It was too late to print off the correct fliers as I had ran out of printing credits. However I decided the take these fliers home and then print off a standard advertisement layout on the backside of each of my fliers listing information of the Venue, Time, Date and supporting acts, which is extra from the original fliers. I preferred having something on the back of the fliers as I felt it made them look more complete. I handed the fliers and posters onto Michael who then distributed them around all the sixth form common rooms in the local area broadening our advertisement market area.

From looking at the official Eagles website. i knew what type of information would be expected from a band website.

On the home page i inserted a brief welcome note to greet the audience to the page. I felt the page was a bit bland as it only had a welcome message and it looked incomplete. I managed to fix this by putting up images advertising the gig I’m hosting on this page. This now becomes the first thing the audience would see upon visiting my page which is good as firstly they’ll know they’re in the right place as they would have found out about the page from the same image so a sense of familiarity is good and secondly because it would remind them of the upcoming gig straight away. I kept the Guestbook page so it was possible to get feedback from the audience which is what I wanted from my site, to see if it was beneficial at all to any viewers. I found that the Guestbook wasn’t really used to a great amount about any feedback I did receive was positive on the band and site

I originally intended to have Merch (Merchandise) page where i planned to have photographs of promotional clothing Luci and Jodie were going to hand make using cheap clothing and print-making methods. They began carving our designs on some clay-like printing stencil. I helped them with some of the craving and at times found that it was quite difficult but we managed to crave them pretty well. Unfortunately we didn’t realise that the prints would turn out backwards when drawing on my designs so prints of the band name turned out backwards therefore unusable. We abandoned the idea of clothing as it was very time consuming and the gig date as approaching very quickly. I therefore abandoned the idea of a merchandise page and thought I was better off not including it.

Finally the Media page would provide the viewer with examples of the band’s music so they can see whether it’s within their taste. In order to get a music player onto the page i used an online MP3 player provided by a site called reverbnation and uploaded a few tracks from the band’s repertoire which is then displayed upon my web-page. I had planned to put up the promotion video I was to create for the band so that the viewer can really get to know the group and their personality behind the music. This I had to leave until after the gig as I intended to use shots from the gig in order to create the video. Unfortunately the video file was too large to put upon my page so i decided not to feature it.

I collected numbers and contact email addresses for The Square and The Marquee in order to discuss with them available gig dates for Orgazmatron, keeping Log of conversations with the venues. I kept the band in loop with everything I was doing so they didn’t feel left out or forgotten. I was hoping to book a gig for mid December as I felt it gave us a fair amount of time before and after to do preparation and evaluation work. I found contacting the venues difficult as I had to rely on them being around to take my calls and helping me arrange the event. Results ran thin at The Square so I began communicating with The Marquee. After a short while a result came through and the marquee offered me a gig date to pass onto the band. When I put this past the band I couldn’t confirm the event due to band issues which led on to us missing the provided gig date. I began to learn at this point that having to rely on others outside my group could be a big problem, fortunately the band managed to sort their issues fairly quickly but they caused me to delay my gig date to sometime in January 2008. As I had to change my date I was possible to try booking the gig at The Square once more. Again I rang and mailed Steve Harcourt from the square and this time round my efforts were successful and I was able to book a gig for the 24th of January which was also an available date for the band so the gig was confirmed.

(research results and evaluations found at: www.tonyrules.wordpress.com) — My task for my A2 media studies advanced production was to create a cross media promotional package for a new and upcoming band. I chose to explore band promotion through the means of a web-page, Poster/Flyers, EP CD Cover and Band photography. Giving myself an event to advertise allows me to promote the band further whilst giving something back to the audiences who are drawn into my advertisements. I have had experience from my first year of media studies in the fields of filming and working in live/active environments when I was working on an opening to a film noir styled film. I am familiar with software such as final cut pro and I’ll have to sync up moving imagery with an audio track. I’ve have experience in sound and music in my music technology course where I’ve used programs such as pro tools and cubase midi sequencer which I hope that the experience there will help me too. I enjoyed the experience and wanted to see if my knowledge and experience of the mistakes I made last year with my production would have a positive effect on the methods I use this year.

The group and I decided upon the band ‘Orgazmatron’ who have been together for approximately a year and originate from the local area. Their name and music style gave we a huge amount of ideas for the visual advertisement and Luci did some research into the name and found out that their name originates from the 1973 Woody Allen film ‘Sleepers’. I began to collect ideas for the band logo and for poster/fliers, taking some influence from the film ‘Sleepers’ with the ideas of sex robots but deciding to give it more human-like features. While I was drawing up ideas for the visual promotion the group and I came to decide on a promotion team name. I expected our target audience would be within the range of 16+ year olds and we wanted to choose something quick and easy to remember that would appeal to late teens. Baring in mind the language popular to late teens we decided upon ‘Arse Kickin’ Promotions’ as its punchy and outrageous status would likely attract attention from our target audience.

I collected ideas to what I find is effective promotion and in which way did I find out about upcoming bands/performances. I wrote these ideas down then highlighted my best options and I found that the most effective way to get the word out about my band would be to make posters/fliers to hand out and to broadcast the band over internet social networking sites myspace and facebook. I collected a few examples of imagery I planned to use to get ideas for posters and then put my results through some teenagers to see which idea seemed most appealing. A bold comic style showed most popular so I now started using the ideas of the robot and the other sci-fi objects to start drawing together some development ideas. I received positive feedback upon the robot logo from the focus group (See Focus Group Evaluation) and decided to take that idea further. I sketched out some design ideas for the posters and flyers in a comic style as it was voted most eye-catching and then shown them around to some family and friends and received feedback on the most popular idea.

I came down to my final idea for the poster and fliers and I particularly liked this idea as the composition and features in the imagery were both interesting and eye-catching. I began to draw out the final design on A3 piece of paper using some good quality felt pens to give out the comic book effect. Upon completion I made sure I had all the necessary information on my poster which was the band name, the band website, our promotion name and the eye-catching imagery with the Robot clearly shown on the front. I felt that the bright colours and use of composition made the poster both appealing and effective. I found out after completion that I incorrectly spelt a part of our promotion team name but as I had drew the whole idea down on paper I couldn’t correct my mistake without depreciating the quality of the poster. The only other option was to change our promotion name slightly from ‘Arse’ to ‘Ass’ everywhere else in our project to avoid confusion. This however proved unpopular with the rest of my group who wanted to remain with our current name so we were left with no choice but to have the incorrect spelling on our advertisements and hoped that it wouldn’t be too much of an issue.

I now started to look into possible places where we could possibly host a gig for our band. I could only find 3 ideal places that was appropriate and accessible to our promotional threshold which were; the home town’s local venue called ‘The Square.’ A nearby popular music bar in Hertford, short train ride away called ‘The Marquee’ and then I arranged access to a performing theatre within the college with the music tutors so I could host the whole gig completely. In the focus group we put our initial ideas past some students, this allowed me to find out where the most popular venue would be after giving them the choice. I found that the focus group’s most popular choice due to sound quality and access was The Square. The Hertford Marquee being the second choice because it is more difficult to get to. Which leaves me the college held gig as a last resort if I was unable to find a slot at The Square or The Marquee.

My next task was to get a gig for the group. I found this very difficult at times as the square were too busy at times to talk to me and on top of that the band were experiencing problems with the members and were on the verge of splitting. (Logs of conversations and summary of getting the gig found on the blog) after a couple of months i managed to negotiate with both the Square and the band and booked the gig for the 24th of January 2008

Whilst I was communicating with the venues about available dates I began the website that audiences could familiarise themselves with the group. I began building the website on an online web-builder,‘Freewebs,’ as I knew the software and already half knew how to work it (see website write-ups on blog). Upon the website I had pages such as Home page, Tour, Media, Band, Myspace and Guestbook. I felt I did the website to a satisfactory standard. The site is clearly laid out, informative and beneficial for the viewer. As a user I found the site is easy to understand, navigate through and entertaining. All the information on the site is necessary and is what I would expect from a band website. Making sure I had an official website to compare to helped me to achieve this. Having a list of Tour date for the band was effective because it informed viewers of upcoming gig dates for the band even if it isn’t hosted myself it was promotion of the band that was most important and a fully informative site was essential. The Band page and Myspace page was good as they provided the viewer with links with other pages so that a fan could explore the band into further detail or possibly contact them.

The next priority was to get word out about the gig to our target audiences so that they have the most notice possible to make plans. (read ‘Creating the posters and distributing them’ on my blog) I advertised the gig thoroughly upon connection sites on the web and Luci had taken photographs and printed the posters a fliers which we distributed around all the hotspots in college and around sixth forms in my home town of Cheshunt. I felt that our group has spread word of the gig very well as i could see my advertisement constantly walking around college between lessons.

When the evening of the gig came to an end I packed up all the equipment and made my way back to the main desk to pick the fliers collected from audiences when they enter the venue. I received back 3 fliers which means that at least 3 people came to the gig due to our promotions. This result wasn’t as much as I hoped because I advertised the gig thoroughly. Factors to why the feedback was so small maybe due to the gig date being a Thursday when most of our target audience have college/school/work the next day. It was booked for late January and nobody had much money either. I was fairly pleased that 3 people did manage to come presenting fliers because it does show that regardless of these factor our advertisements did work for some people.

When the gig date arrived I hired out a camera and made a quick note of what questions I wanted to ask the band so that I could complete the interview quickly and sufficiently. I chose to make the promotional video about the band and one song in particular, one of their oldest called ‘Active Mental Freedom’ because I found the subject really interesting and having the band describe to us what influences them I feel would interest the viewer. The Interview ran fairly smoothly and was only interrupted once when a woman enter the room to get some water. Even then she didn’t make any noise so there was no necessary reason to cut her out. When editing I kept her in as the singer made a good point about something I asked him and also keeping her in reminds the viewer that the whole video is shot in a live environment and I felt it gives my video a sense of reality around it. I felt that in order to make my production better it would have been ideal to have access to two cameras during their interview and performance so i could leave one in a fixed place, as you can see in all the interview moments the camera never moves whilst holding another camera to zoom into some of the members faces or the body language they express. This would have given the entire interview much more appeal but as the venue has a one camera policy due to some health and safety issues i was only permitted to bring one. I chose to leave the camera in it’s fixed place so that i had a shot of each performer and i wouldn’t miss an opportunity if one decided to contribute and i wasn’t expecting it. The performance itself would look more effective as i could sync up the performance perfectly with a variety of angles without having to keep my shots too vague for the viewers to unable recognize any continuity errors.

Before the band came on I asked the staff working on the sound desk at The Square if they could possibly record the bands performance so that I didn’t have to worry about capturing a good audio track using the camera which would have been impossible. The plus side to have the audio track recorded on the sound desk is that it’s the best quality sound I could possibly receive from the performance and that all my recording on the camera would fit along side it perfectly.

When it came to shooting the performance itself I decided that I would leave the camera in a fixed place on the balcony seating area for the whole duration of Active mental freedom so that I knew that I would definitely have enough footage to last the song and have a foundation shot to fall back upon if some shots were badly taken, I also chose to do this so that I could later sync up the audio track with the visual to give the live appearance.

I hand held the camera from here on so that I didn’t take up too big of area which would cause conflict with the audience.

To give the promotional DVD the extra touch of class i used a program called (blank) where i followed simple steps in order to create a DVD menu.

Overall I found that our project went smoothly. Although my group received little results through our methods of feedback i felt that the venue we respectfully packed out which is hopefully due to our advertisements, I managed to ask some of the audience ow they knew about the performance and i found a mixture of responses. Some came as the band themselves posted out bulletins advertising their gig as being already big fans of the group came along to the performance. Others i found saw the poster around the college but didn’t see any flier available. I’ve learnt more than before that having to rely on other people outside my group is time consuming and a bad idea. I felt that my posters and fliers were effective but unable to do their duty because the target audience didn’t wish to take part in the event due to money and chosen day of the week. The website had a promising start and receive approximately 10 hits and 3 comments in the first hour but soon became forgotten and not looked at by the audience. Band Promotion is a big job and with the time provided I felt we had a good attempt at it. To have got at least 3 people to come to the gig is a result although a small one which does prove that our methods of promotion did work a little bit and I think our variety of medias used in order to push the band helped their name spread more in local and surround areas.

To choose what style of editing i would carry out when coming to do the band promotion video i decided ask around my friendship group and some of my colleagues at college. As they are my target age group i thought the best way to find out what interviews they see and like was to ask them. I found that majority of people watched interviews of bands on tv channel MTV and that others watched videos they come across on the internet. As MTV seemed a specific source i looked into how their interviews take place to get ideas of how I’m going to shoot my own. I found out that MTV also give unsigned bands the oppotunity to be interviewed and go on television on MTV2.

When watching an interview with an unsigned band i noted that the interview runs as long as one of their songs do and along side their interview you can hear their music. between shots of them talking ou can see the group rehearsing in their garage. i liked the way MTV cut between the band talking and them performing as it kept me entertained when watching. I also noticed that i never heard the interviewer talk, only the band answering the questions. telling us about themselves, the local area, the oppotunities they had and so forth. The interview was short and sweet and i thought it was ideal to recreate in a simular style for my group as the viewer wouldn’t get bored with the style its shot.

As i had booked a gig for the band at local venue The Square i thought it would be ideal to shoot the interview in the lounge area downstairs. I would have plenty of time to shoot them before the loud music came on and the relaxed enviroment i felt would give a laid back appearance. I then would film the actual performance so i could later on edit all the footage together.

I tested the camera before I met the group to see what the sound quality was like filming from a distance. i discovered that the microphone built into the camera produce a high quality and clear sound which then provides me with less equipment to carry to the concert. To film the performance itself i realised that the music would be too loud and that sound clipping may occur. The Square provides a live recording facility on their mixing desks so i was going ask them for a recording of the gig that i could sync up with the visual later on.

When it came to make the Website for our band I decided I would take a look at other Official band websites on the net to take note and influence in order to help with my own ideas. I had taken a look at the official websites for such bands as Led Zeppelin and The Arctic Monkeys to see whether I could possibly create similar features to their sites within my own. Their sites were complex and looked very professional and the amount of information available seemed endless. I wanted to use an online website builder called ‘Freewebs’ as I already had previous experience with this site and I felt more comfortable with how it works and what I could achieve with it. However I knew I couldn’t create a site as complex as Led Zeppelin’s and The Arctic Monkeys’ using that so I went in search for an official band website with a more traditional layout. I soon found that the official website for The Eagles was laid out in this format (http://www.eaglesband.com/index.php) From looking at The Eagles webpage I was able to make myself a short list of pages I wished to include onto my site such as the ‘Home Page’ which will welcome the visitor to the site and has the advertisement of the gig that our promotion group has organized. ‘The Band’ has photographs of each member on stage so that the viewer can familiarize themselves with the band. Each member also has a link to their personal page they host on myspace. From here any of the fans can continue to get to know more about each member and possibly contact them. ‘Tour’ which will list all up and coming gigs for the New Year including the one I’m organising myself. ‘Merch’ would show a list of merchandise available at the gig with pictures. On the ‘Media’ page I wanted to add an embedded MP3 player so that visitors to the site can have a taster to what the band sound like. I would also upload the promotional video of the group onto this page for their fans to see In the navigation bar I’ve also got a link to the band myspace site so that if visitors wish to they can contact the band directly and also find out some more information more personal to the group. The last page I added to my site is a guest book so that any visitors can leave feedback and comments to us and the band. Finally to keep track of the amount of visitors to my site Freewebs hosts a tracker system so I can keep record of who visits my site, where they are located, how long they spend on my site and what actions they do on my site. I felt that these pages would provide any fans with all the information they would need on the band and would help in order to get the band more known to those who don’t know them already.

After looking into these band websites I see that the style and overall look to the page does reflect upon the band. Led Zeppelin’s page had a classic/vintage appeal to it with the natural colours and the scroll-like papered pages. it looked classy and stylish which I felt reflected upon the band itself as they are a serious, widely respected band who are labelled as one of the rock legends and they needed a website that would back up that same image. The Arctic Monkeys however are a new band on the scene. With their modern and new style their page was cleverly designed with a graffiti covered building wall that appeals to the younger age groups. All the art work on the page was modern and would appeal to its target audience. When I came to think about Orgazmatron a lot of their music style and lyric subjects are of a sci-fi/supernatural nature whilst remaining serious about their image and credibility. At this point I’m thinking of having a plain black profile that gives off a smooth effect in a minimalist style which would give the website a ‘professional’ appearance about it which I believe is the image the band are going for.

I needed to book a local gig for my group ‘Orgazmatron’ I found two main local venues, Harlow Square being my first option as it has a bigger market area and it was closest to where most of our advertisement will be displayed. My second option was Hertford marquee that acquires possible audiences to travel to via train. If that were the case I would advertise in my home area of Cheshunt, as the distance is just as great from that area as well as Harlow.

Contacting The Square

Thursday 1st November I took down the telephone number for local club Harlow Square. Later in the evening I called The Square to try and sort out gig free date to book and organise a gig for our band. I gain a contact name and was informed he’ll be available to talk the next day. For the following week I hadn’t been able to contact Steve Harcourt until Wednesday 7th November.

I briefly explained to Steve who I was and our target we aim to meet for our project and asked if there is any possibility of hosting our concert at The Square. Steve seems optimistic to let us host an evening at The Square but is afraid that he is fully booked for the winter months which may cause us to reconsider where we host our event.

Steve offered help in finding a space at The Square and has asked me for a list of everything I want in an email and he’ll see what he can do and contact me back.

This is what I sent:

‘Hello Steve,

I contacted you yesterday asking if you had any free space for a band I’m promoting to perform at The Square for my media project.

What we need exactly is just an evening sometime during the week, Preferably nearer to the weekend. Ideally we would like our band ‘Orgazmatron’ on as headliner so that we could advertise them as a main event. However if we could possibley slot them in as a supporting act that may also be fine.

As it’s for our project we’ll need some space around the stage to record their performance, just one camera either side of the stage would be grand so we could get a variety of angles. If possible a gig sometime in December would be brilliant and it will fit in some time for us to get preparations ready for it.

Thank you taking your time to listen and I’ll really appreciate it if you could slot in a date.

Tony’

Once I sent this message Steve didn’t contact me back for the best part of a week and I was starting to get worried our time was coming to an end to find and sort out a gig for our band. I decided to ring Steve’s contact number at the square again. Once I got through I explained that my time was short and I needed a reply extremely soon. He told me he thinks all the main event evenings are fully booked and our best option is to see if I could get the band a show case night which are for the more amateur bands. He told me he’ll speak to a man called Shane who is the organiser to these nights for me to see if any dates were available and he will read my email tomorrow as he hasn’t been able to do so yet.

To this he replied:

‘I have spoken to Shane and the Showcase nights are fully booked, as are the Fridays until the new year.

The only thing I can suggest is that we try to sort something out for the new year, but obviously the earlier the better, as things will get booked up soon.

Sorry about that and I hope we can sort it out!’

At this point I sensed that to continue trying to get a gig at the square would be extremely difficult and whilst I was awaiting Steve’s reply I contacted the marquee.

Contacting The Marquee

I wasn’t entirely sure to what address to contact the marquee when I visited their online website but I sent out an email similar to the one I sent to the square to a man named Kevin who works at the marquee. I gave Kevin a day in order to reply but I wasn’t confident that I contacted the right address.

Again, I’m really sorry but I’m sure you understand that I’m as shocked as anyone about this

Body: OK then, is it possible you could find a temporary bassist to step in for this one gig?

hey mark

i contacted the band and they cannot make the 2nd of december as their bassist has quit the band.

i asked if they could find a temporary bassist, but they’ll need to find one.

so i was wondering what dates you have free in the new year.

thanks again

tony

Contacting The Square Again

The marquee didn’t reply to my request but I decided not to chase it up as I felt it was pointless to book another gig in the new year when it was not for sure that the band with be able to get a temporary bassist.

However the band managed to reorganise themselves so that they were able to perform again. So I carried on searching for a possible gig date but this time in the new year.

As I now had this new extension of time I decided to contact the square again.

So I sent out a new email to Steve at the square

hello steve,

I sent steve a message explaining that I wanted to record the bands performance sing 1 or 2 cameras (I initially wanted 2 so that it would be easier to capture more angles) but steve explained that due to the venues health and safety regulations we were only entitled to bring one camera.

Title: Band Interview
Shoot Date: Thursday 24th January
Location: Harlow Square

Q: Is the location right for the script?
A: Yes as it is where their performance will take place

Q: How available is the location
A: Very, as we have plenty of time during band sound checks to interview the band in the lounge area

Q: How noisy is the location. Is it suitable for recording sync sound?
A: There will live music being played in the hall above but our interview will be filmed in one shot/take so this shouldn’t be too much trouble

Q: Is the location bright enough? Will it need extra lighting?
A: No, the room is well lit already

Q: What power supply is available at the location? Can it be used by the production?
A: We’ll be running on our own provided battery life

Q: Is location heated?
A: The room has heating which will be maintained at a comfortable level

Q: How long does it take to get to the location?
A: Approximately 10 minutes walking distance

Q: How will you get to the location? What means of transport will you have to use?
A: We will be walking

Q: How much will it cost each person to get there? Are there parking fees etc?
A: No fees

Q: Is the location big enough to accommodate crew and cast?
A: Yes

Q: Do you need permission from local council/police to film at the location?
A: No, the venue has given us permission to film on their premises

Q: Where are the nearest toilets?
A: Within the venue

Q: Are there any special health and safety issues with this location?
A: Not whilst we’re filming, over crowding may become an issue in the evening but we’ll locate our camera up with sound platform so that it
will become no threat to the public.

Q: Nearest Hospital/Casualty?
A: About 2 minute walk away
